Tata Motors is gearing up to launch a petrol-powered version of its popular SUV, the Tata Safari. The new variant is currently in its final testing phase and is expected to make its way to showrooms by July 2025.
What makes this version even more exciting is the price — with a new engine under the hood, the petrol Safari is expected to cost ₹1.5 to ₹2 lakh less than the current diesel model. That could make it an attractive option for buyers looking for a full-size SUV without stretching their budget.

A camouflaged prototype of the petrol Safari was recently spotted in the public. While the overall silhouette of the SUV remains largely the same, some visual updates may be in store — including a fresh set of star-pattern alloy wheels to give it a slightly new look.To distinguish it from the diesel variant, Tata might also make a few interior tweaks, including new badges or upholstery.
All-New 1.5L Turbo-Petrol Engine
Under the hood, the upcoming Safari will feature an in-house 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine (tGDi) that produces 168 bhp and 280 Nm of torque. This engine is part of Tata’s newly developed Hyperion powertrain family, designed for better efficiency and performance. Transmission options will likely include a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT).
This engine was first showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo and uses a lightweight aluminium structure for enhanced rigidity and reduced emissions.
Why It Could Be Cheaper
Unlike the current diesel Safari, which uses a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre engine – Kryotec engine the petrol version will use an entirely in-house engine. That gives Tata better control over costs, and the savings may be passed on to customers. As a result, the Safari Petrol could launch with a price tag that’s ₹1.5–2 lakh lower than its diesel sibling, making it one of the most affordable turbo-petrol SUVs in its segment.
What Will Stay the Same?
Mechanically, the petrol engine is a significant change. But in terms of design and features, Tata is likely to retain most elements from the current model, such as:
- Bold and muscular styling
- Sculpted hood and chrome-accented grille
- Sleek LED DRLs and projector headlamps
- 10-inch JBL infotainment system
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Some cosmetic changes inside the cabin may be added to give the petrol variant a distinct look.
More Models to Get Petrol Power
Tata isn’t stopping with the Safari. The Harrier and the upcoming Sierra are also expected to receive the same 1.5L tGDi petrol engine, as the company diversifies away from a diesel-only powertrain strategy. With stricter emission norms and changing consumer preferences, this shift toward petrol power is timely and strategic.
