Skoda had announced on 27th February that they are set to introduce sub-4-meter compact SUV for the Indian market. Scheduled for launch in the first half of 2025, this SUV will mark the Czech carmaker’s third major product in India, following the successful introductions of the Kushaq and the Slavia. Here is what we know so far about this compact SUV from Skoda.
Skoda’s “India 2.0” saw the development of MQB-A0-IN platform, which debuted with the Kushaq in 2021. Developed jointly in India and the Czech Republic, this platform has emphasized high localization, low cost of ownership(thanks to the tax breaks) and safety. With this platform that underpins both Kushaq and the Slavia, Skoda has managed to score decent sales figure with both their vehicles.
Skoda aims to leverage the advantages of the sub-four-meter segment, which offers tax benefits and aligns with the preferences of Indian car buyers. By tapping into this segment, Skoda intends to expand its customer base and enhance its market share, with a target of selling 100,000 vehicles annually in India by 2026.
By doubling down on local sourcing and production, the company aims to penetrate deeper into Tier 3 and Tier 4 cities, thereby broadening its reach and strengthening its foothold in the Indian market.
The upcoming compact SUV will utilize the proven 1.0 TSI turbocharged petrol engine, delivering 115 horsepower and 175 Nm of torque. This engine which is known for its performance and fuel efficiency (by Skoda’s standards), will be paired with both manual and automatic transmission options to cater to diverse driving preferences.
In a unique move, Skoda has engaged customers directly in the naming process for its new Sub 4 Meter Compact SUV through the ‘Name Your Skoda’ campaign. Shortlisted names, such as Kwiq, Kariq, Kyroq, Kymaq, and Kylaq, reflect the brand’s SUV lineage while inviting input from enthusiasts across India. The winning entry will not only name the SUV but also earn its creator a free car and a visit to Skoda’s headquarters in Prague, Czech Republic.
From a design perspective, Skoda’s Sub 4 Meter Compact SUV is expected to feature evolved styling elements, including distinctive LED DRLs, a revamped grille, and a stubbier nose and boot. These design enhancements aim to enhance the vehicle’s visual appeal and create a strong impression in the competitive compact SUV segment.
Skoda’s ambitious sales target of 1 lakh units and a five percent market share by 2030 highlights its long-term commitment to the Indian market. With a robust manufacturing infrastructure in Chakan, near Pune, and a focus on building safer, high-quality vehicles, Skoda is poised to redefine the compact SUV segment.
The Skoda sub 4-meter compact SUV will compete with Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Kia Sonet, Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger.
