Stellantis announced on Friday that it will bring the electric vehicle (EV) lineup of its Chinese joint venture partner, Leapmotor to India.
The move will add a fourth brand under Stellantis’ India operations, alongside Citroën, Jeep, and Maserati. Leapmotor will also become the third battery electric vehicle (BEV) brand to establish a presence in India, following BYD and Vinfast. BYD has been operating in India since 2021, while Vinfast is expected to begin operations later this year.
According to Stellantis, Leapmotor’s focus on low-carbon mobility aligns with its broader strategy to expand its EV footprint and prioritize sustainability across global markets. In 2024, Leapmotor delivered close to 300,000 vehicles worldwide, doubling its year-on-year growth.

“We’re announcing the entry of the Leapmotor brand in India, strengthening our commitment to this market,” said Shailesh Hazela, CEO and Managing Director of Stellantis India. “With Jeep and Citroën, we have built a strong foundation and understand the strategic importance India holds. Globally, Leapmotor emphasizes innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction. We aim to introduce premium EVs that integrate advanced technology, comfort, and sustainability for Indian consumers.”
Stellantis did not share a specific timeline for the launch. However, in 2023, the company had indicated it would explore using its local manufacturing facilities in India to produce Leapmotor EVs, aiming to mitigate the challenges posed by high import duties. Under Stellantis’ rollout plan for the India and Asia Pacific region, Leapmotor’s initial focus was on Australia and New Zealand, with India identified as part of the subsequent phase.
The introduction of Leapmotor in India is expected to further diversify the country’s emerging EV landscape.
