Safety scores differ across the Baleno’s variant lineup. The Sigma and Delta variants achieved 24.04 out of 32 points in adult occupant protection, while the Zeta and Alpha variants scored 26.52 out of 32 points. The 2.48-point difference reflects the additional safety equipment in higher-specification models.

Child occupant protection scores remained uniform across all variants at 34.81 out of 49 points.

Safety Equipment Configuration

The BNCAP assessment documented the safety equipment across variants. Standard features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), reverse parking sensors, speed alert system, seat belt reminder system, seat belt pre-tensioners with load limiters, and ISOFIX child seat anchorage points.

The Zeta and Alpha variants feature six airbags total, adding side head curtain airbags and side chest airbags to the standard dual front airbags. This configuration accounts for the higher adult occupant protection scores in these variants.

Crash Test Performance

The evaluation included multiple impact scenarios. The frontal offset deformable barrier test yielded 11.54 out of 16 points across all variants. The side movable deformable barrier test showed variation between variants, with base models scoring 12.50 out of 16 points and premium variants achieving 14.99 out of 16 points.

The side pole impact test received an “OK” rating across the range.

Child Safety Evaluation

Child occupant protection testing used specific restraint systems, including the Britax Roemer Baby Safe 3 with Base for 18-month-old occupants and the Britax Roemer Trifix 2 for 3-year-old children. The dynamic test component scored 16.81 out of 24 points, while the child restraint system installation assessment achieved 12 out of 12 points.

Safety Technology Standards

The Baleno incorporates various safety technologies as standard equipment. Electronic Stability Control meets UN GTR No.8/UNECE R140/AIS-133 specifications. The seat belt reminder system complies with AIS-145 standards, and pedestrian protection systems follow AIS-100 requirements.

Test Methodology

The BNCAP evaluation follows established protocols outlined in Automotive Industry Standard (AIS)-197. Testing was conducted by authorized agencies as specified in Rule 126 of Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989. The assessment covers adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, and safety assist technologies.

Rating Applicability

The base rating applies to Sigma, Delta, Zeta, and Alpha variants with both manual and AGS transmission options. The optional rating, which reflects the higher scores, applies specifically to Zeta and Alpha variants that include the enhanced airbag configuration.

Technical Specifications

The test vehicle weighed 1,220 kg and represents the hatchback body style with two-row seating. Testing occurred in 2024, with results published in 2025. The evaluation encompasses vehicles manufactured in India and sold through Maruti Suzuki’s network.

The BNCAP rating provides standardized safety performance data for the Baleno across its variant range, offering buyers objective information about crash protection capabilities in different model configurations.
