Jeep entered the Indian market in 2016 with the launch of the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, both imported as Completely Built Units (CBUs). In April 2017, Jeep introduced the Compass, a locally manufactured compact SUV produced at FCA India’s Ranjangaon facility near Pune, Maharashtra. This facility also produces export-spec Compass models for various right-hand-drive markets.

In India, Jeep currently offers the Compass, manufactured domestically, and the Wrangler, which is assembled as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit. In mid-2019, Jeep expanded its Compass lineup with the off-road-focused Trailhawk variant, featuring a BS6-compliant diesel engine.

Jeep India is also developing a new seven-seater SUV based on the Compass platform, globally known as the Commander but likely to be branded as the Meridian in India. This SUV will aim to compete with segment leaders like the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour.

Jeep began its Indian operations under the FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) group and initially introduced the Wrangler Unlimited, Grand Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee SRT as premium CBUs. Recognizing the need for more affordable offerings, Jeep made a strategic move by launching the made-in-India Compass, which gained strong traction, competing with models like the Mahindra XUV500 and Hyundai Tucson.

Currently, Jeep India operates a network of 90 dealerships across the country and plans to expand its lineup, including all-new seven-seater SUVs to cater to a broader audience.
