Renault Boreal: A New Contender in the 7-Seater SUV Space. Launch Soon!

Renault is preparing to make a strong comeback in the Indian and global markets with two key launches: the new-generation five-seater Duster and the three-row seven-seater Boreal. Both SUVs are scheduled for an Indian debut in 2026. The Renault Boreal, a longer and more spacious iteration of the third-generation Duster, will make its global debut in the coming months, beginning with Latin America. Renault has confirmed plans to introduce Boreal to over 70 countries. In India, it will directly rival segment leaders like the Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari, and MG Hector Plus.

The rendered version of the Renault Boreal showcases a bold, SUV-inspired design language. It features a black grille with Renault’s updated logo at the center, sleek LED headlamps, black fog lamp housing, and a raised bonnet with sharp creases. Body-wide black cladding, squared wheel arches, stylish alloy wheels, a blacked-out roof with silver roof rails, and a shark fin antenna characterize the side profile. At the rear, the SUV sports LED taillamps, a muscular black bumper, a silver skid plate, and a roof-mounted spoiler. Compared to the Dacia Bigster, the Boreal incorporates subtle design revisions for a more refined aesthetic, including a new grille, wider front intake, and distinctive lighting elements.

Dimensions

Built on the same CMF-B platform as the Dacia Bigster, the Renault Boreal is expected to share its proportions, measuring approximately 4.57 metres in length, 1.81 metres in width, and 1.71 metres in height, with a 2.7-metre wheelbase. The Boreal will be 230 millimetres longer than the standard Duster and have a 43 millimetre longer wheelbase, translating to increased interior space, especially in the third row. These enhancements make it better suited for large families and long-distance travel.

Interiors and Features

While the interiors of the Boreal test mule have not yet been officially revealed, it is expected to inherit most features from the upcoming Duster. These include a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a seven or 10-inch digital instrument cluster, dual-zone climate control, an Arkamys audio system, wireless phone charging, a panoramic sunroof, and ventilated front seats. Unlike its five-seater sibling, the Boreal will include a three-row seating layout. Rear seat convenience and space are expected to be focal points. Premium touches such as an electronic parking brake and connected car tech are also likely. The safety package is set to be robust, featuring multiple airbags and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Engine and Powertrain Options

Renault has not confirmed powertrain options for the Boreal in India yet, but a few details have emerged based on global speculations and spy sightings. The SUV is expected to mirror the Duster’s engine lineup, including mild-hybrid and full-hybrid powertrains. In some international markets, the Boreal may offer a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine that delivers 167 BHP and an eight-speed automatic transmission. A flex-fuel variant is also on the cards for Latin American markets. European versions may feature the TCe 130 4×4 mild-hybrid system with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 48V setup, as well as a full-hybrid 1.8-litre petrol engine mated to a multi-mode clutchless automatic transmission. This full-hybrid powertrain can manage up to 80 percent of city drives in electric-only mode, thanks to regenerative braking and electric motor support.

Boreal vs. Bigster

However, based on the Dacia Bigster, the Renault Boreal will have distinct visual and technical upgrades. It features a redesigned trapezoidal grille, horizontal slats, a revised bumper, and signature Renault styling at the front and rear. While it shares the Bigster’s rugged stance, the Boreal leans toward a refined, urban SUV aesthetic. Its side profile appears nearly identical, though it may include new alloy wheels and modified body cladding. At the rear, expect a differently styled bumper, new tail lamps, and a slightly tweaked tailgate for a more premium finish. Door handles mounted on the C-pillar, a design cue borrowed from the Dacia Bigster, are expected to be retained.

India Launch and Market Positioning

The Renault Boreal will arrive in India in 2026 alongside the all-new Duster. It will likely be positioned in the C-SUV segment, offering five- and seven-seat versions based on regional preferences. The SUV aims to balance practicality, modern technology, and competitive pricing. Renault hopes this new product line will rejuvenate its brand image and capture a significant share of India’s booming SUV market.
